Don’t call it a convertible — it’s a cabriolet. The 2017 Mercedes-Maybach S650 Cabriolet is an exclusive, elegant drop top that made exclusively for the Donald Trumps of the world. The royal ragtop makes its debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show this week.
It’s first open-air automobile from the Mercedes-Maybach brand and is also one of only 300 that will be made. We are told only 75 of those will be sold in the U.S., so if you can afford one, you really should put in an order right now.
Tucked beneath its muscular hood is a 6.0-liter twin-turbo V-12. The monstrous engine produces 621 horsepower and 738 lb-ft of torque. It’s mated to a seven-speed automatic transmission and has a top speed of 155 mph.
The tony four-seater is available in three delicious flavors. Option A is bright Zircon Red paint with a creamy Porcelain and Piano black interior and a matching black soft-top. If that’s too dramatic, there’s the option of Cote d’Azur Blue paint with a Porcelain and Saddle Brown combination and a beige top. For the more nautically minded, there’s a designo Diamond White version with a Porcelain and Yacht Blue combo with a dark blue top option.
Inside, the leather seats sport waterfall-like perforations with diamond quilting to pad the most pampered of bottoms. The overall design for the Mercedes-Maybach S650 Cabriolet is described as one that provides the ultimate in open-air exclusivity and “embodies modern luxury and represents the design philosophy of Sensual Purity: it is both hot and cool at the same time,” proclaims the product release. Sounds like a perfect fit for someone that has it all and some to spare.
Up front, the S650 features a chrome grille with the Maybach emblem squeezed between the thin, wing-like chrome fender trim. The S650 is based on the soft top S-Class and its sidewall dropping line also droops down towards the rear. The 20-inch Maybach forged wheels look like massive power saw blades and have a bichromatic finish.
There is also entrance lighting that projects the Maybach logo in case the valet confuses your dramatic drop top for a more plebeian offering. To announce the rarity of your ride, there’s chrome-plated “1 of 300” lettering on the cup holder and Maybach lettering on the steering wheel. A certificate signed by Dr. Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars is also included along with a classy car cover that matches the top. Plus there’s a set of fancy matching luggage for the jet set.
Price and delivery details have not been announced at this time, but if you have to ask…well you know.
